2015 San Fran Avon39
10 years ago, Janis and I stood in the kitchen of our new house. We were all smiles until the phone rang. It was her doctor from UNC Lineberger with dreadful news that changed our lives. As you all know, Janis is a fighter! She faced the breast cancer diagnosis head on, did her research and started down her path to beat this terrible disease. With the help of our community and the wonderful folks at Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, our positive story is still being written. Many aren’t so fortunate.
Two years ago, Janis and I walked the Avon39 in San Francisco. Janis was a veteran of many such walks. I had no idea what an impact walking would have on me. The long hours and dozens of miles of training, the faces of other walkers at the starting line, and the tears of joy EVERYONE had as the survivors are honored at the finish line made a HUGE impression on me, Julia and her friend Mason Harris. I got to see first hand what Avon39 can do for the communities they support and the research they fund.
This year, on June 24th at 6am, Janis, Julia and I will be in Boston for start of the Avon39 Walk to End Breast Cancer. This year, the Tarheel TaTas are lucky enough to be joined by one of our dear friends Julie Harris. Her daughter, Mason, walked with us in San Francisco! We are required fundraise to “Earn My 39.” Our team goal is to raise over $17,500 between the 4 of us! Last time I got a lots donations for $39.30 that gave me an idea for this year. I’ve increased my goal this year to $3930. That’s $100/mile to help crush breast cancer! Donate $39.30, $393.00 any amount in between, or more.
The long hours and dozens of miles of training have started up again. It’ll be worth it at the finish line on June 25th!
