EVENT VOLUNTEER SHIFT DESCRIPTIONS
Check-In Friday: All Volunteers must be at least 16 years old at Check-In Friday.
Check-In Friday Set-Up – Assist in the overall set-up of tables, chairs, signage and other supplies for Check-In Friday.
Check-In Friday All Day – Help check-in all Walkers and Crew members on this exciting day! The majority of Volunteers will help in the check-in area by entering participants’ data into a simple laptop computer program, assigning tent addresses to wristbands/luggage tags or by gathering the materials participants receive when they check-in. Volunteers not in the check-in area may greet participants as they arrive at Check-In Friday, work closely with AVON 39 Staff members to answer participant questions, aid the SHOP 39 with set-up & restocking items for sale, distribute fundraising rewards to participants who have reached certain donation levels, assisting Staff with registering participants for next year and more! Volunteers should be ready to jump in wherever needed!
Check-In Friday Medical Area* – Assist with medical data entry. Volunteers should be comfortable working on a laptop computer.
*Medical credential (MD, RN, etc.) required for this position. Please send in a copy of your license to the office with this form.
Check-In Friday Dinner Breaker – Support the Volunteer Coordinator by providing breaks to Volunteers who are working the full day shift. You will be trained before taking over a position temporarily. Volunteers should be comfortable moving around in any position and be flexible.
Opening Ceremony: All Volunteers younger than 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult at Opening Ceremony.
Opening Ceremony – Help prepare and organize the Opening Ceremony site before the Walkers arrive. Volunteers will be unloading boxes, setting up tables and chairs, moving signage & barricades, filling water bottles, assisting Crew members load participant gear onto trucks, etc. We will also need assertive Volunteers to assist with traffic duty. You will be providing direction to vehicles dropping off participants and assisting in maintaining traffic flow. Others will help the Staff manage the crowds of participants and spectators by directing participants to Opening Ceremony. Once the Ceremony ends, all Volunteers will help break down the site. Volunteers should be prepared to be on their feet all morning and be ready to help out wherever needed!
**Moderate lifting is involved in this shift.
Basecamp 39: Volunteers of all ages welcome at the Basecamp 39!
Basecamp 39 Hospitality Support Shift A & B – Assist Staff with 2018 Registrations and distributing Alumni Buttons; assist Sponsors with distribution of materials and giveaways; assist Staff and Crew with various tasks as needed.
Basecamp 39 Saturday Tent Angel Shift A & B – Assist Walkers in putting up (on Saturday) or taking down (on Sunday) their tents. Great project for large groups of Volunteers/Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts!
Closing Ceremony: All Volunteers younger than 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult at Closing Ceremony.
Closing Ceremony Shift A Morning – Help prepare and organize the Closing Ceremony site before the Walkers cross the finish line. Volunteers will be unpacking boxes, lifting tables and chairs, moving signage & barricades, unloading participant gear from the gear trucks, etc. Once the site is set-up, Volunteers will assist with the following: provide traffic direction to vehicles arriving at the Closing Ceremony site; cheer participants across the finish line; distribute t-shirts, water & snacks to participants; aid the SHOP 39 with set-up & restocking items for sale; oversee the participant gear area and assist Staff with registering participants for next year. Volunteers should be prepared to be on their feet all morning!
**Moderate lifting is involved in this shift.
Closing Ceremony Shift B Afternoon – Be ready to help with any of the following: providing traffic direction to vehicles arriving at the Closing Ceremony site; cheering participants into Closing at the finish line; distributing t-shirts, water & snacks to participants; aiding the SHOP 39 with restocking items for sale; managing the participant gear area; arranging participants into groups for Closing Ceremony; assisting Staff with registering participants for next year and more! Volunteers will also assist with the breakdown of the Closing Ceremony site and general clean-up once the Event has come to a close (towards the end of the afternoon). Volunteers should be prepared to be on their feet all afternoon and stay until the end of the shift!
