This is my 20th year of walking and fundraising in the fight against breast cancer. When I began this adventure in 1998 it was to challenge my 60 yr. old body. Could I walk 60 miles in 3 days? When I accomplished that I wondered how much money I could raise? I then realized I could raise more than the required amount. Walking for my daughters and granddaughters was always part of the goal. My supporter in all of this was my husband Bob. He handled all of the the logistics of my participating in multiple events. His unofficial job that he created for himself was to hang 60 signs a day to support the walkers (while I was walking). My hero, lost his life to esophageal gastric cancer that had spread to his liver on May 6, 2010. He asked me to keep walking and fundraising for this cause. So my goal now is to continue walking and fundraising because I know that research and medicines being funded by the fight against breast cancer are also being used to help treat other cancers. And, so, every step I take, and every dollar I raise is honoring Bob's memory.
I have completed 148 long distance breast cancer walks, walked over 7000 miles, and raised over $1.9m in this fight. My plan for 2017 is to walk d.c., s.f. and s.b. My goal is to reach $2,000,000 and set the next goal! My family will continue with Bob's legacy of putting up pink Team California signs along the route.
